Clinical expertise
Dr. Michele Stengård is a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist with over 20 years of experience treating a wide variety of species, including dogs, cats, horses, birds, pocket pets, exotic species, and food animals.
Training and board certification
Dr. Stengård completed her Bachelor of Science degree at North Carolina State University in 1991 and received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine in 1996.
She completed a Small Animal Medicine and Surgery Internship in Massachusetts in 1997, followed by a three-year Comparative Veterinary Ophthalmology Residency at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine.
In 2000, she became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists.
Teaching and research
Dr. Stengård is an internationally recognized expert in veterinary ophthalmology. She has contributed to veterinary textbooks, published scientific research articles, and presented numerous lectures to veterinarians, veterinary students, and breed organizations.
From 2000 to 2013, she worked in private veterinary specialty hospitals in Florida. In 2014, she relocated to Switzerland, first spending time at the University of Zürich Veterinary Teaching and University of Bern Veterinary Teaching Hospital providing consultations, performing surgery, and teaching students and veterinarians. Currently in private practice, Dr. Stengård continues to provide advanced medical and surgical eye care to all animals including cats, dogs, horses, farm animals, birds and a variety of exotic pets.
She is also an affiliate member of the European College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists.
Outside the clinic
Outside of her clinical work, Dr. Stengård enjoys hiking, cross-country skiing, yoga, traveling and learning new languages. She lives in Zürich with her husband, children and 3 cats, Sassy Pants, Mochi, and Harvey.
